Columbia Marble Quarries
One of two Columbia Marble Quarries can be found a short distance out of town along Yankee
Hill Road, the other is located off Parrots Ferry Road. Marble from these two quarries was used
throughout the state, wherever a touch of elegance was needed. The step into the D. O. Mills Bank
building is made from Columbia marble, as are many other sidewalks, tables, and foundations
across the Gold Country. It’s just a short hike to the quarry near Yankee Hill Road, where
immense pieces of stone are lying all about. The face of many of these huge blocks of marble are
grooved in a particular manner, apparently the method used to chisel the pieces apart. It’s well
worth a visit.
